October 2011
New Septic System installed.
A neighbour at the cottage had been working on getting
septic system permits for 3 years! Septic
systems have some very strict setback requirements to protect both the lake and
source groundwater (well systems). Our
unique situation of shared jointly owned lands complicated matters because some
of the septic system components needed to go on the shared back forest lands
(versus placing a system fully on land 100% owned by the homeowner). This caused the permit application to be
escalated all the way to the provincial level, where it ground to a crawl. When Nicky told us in Spring 2011 that it
looked like permission would finally be granted, we quickly jumped on board as
part of the group permit, knowing that a larger system would be required to get
a building permit for our larger home. A
big shout-out THANK YOU to Nicola Taylor!
The system was installed without incidence in October
2011. We got a BioNest system which is
like a mini sewage treatment plant.
Running great so far! Our lawn
was really torn up and interlock patio pulled out, so it was a good thing we
were planning on rebuilding anyways.
