January 2012 - The Final Floorplan!

January 2012

Here’s the floorplan!  Hope the scans turn out OK so you can see it.  We’ve had to make some compromises along the way already.  For example, there just wasn’t enough room to put our master bedroom on the main floor.  Also just a single car garage as our lot isn’t big enough for a double – there are restrictions on how large the footprint can be as a percentage of your lot size.  But all in all, we’re happy with it!  I had fun laying tiny pieces of furniture onto the floorplan to make sure all our stuff would fit.  But it helped to anticipate and make changes that could impact down the road, such as where to tuck closets and doorways.

The front of the house as you pull into the driveway.  This faces the lake.  A single car garage with walkout basement.  The front door is actually off to the left – you’ll see it on the side view next.

The south side of the house, which faces our neighbour’s ravine.  See the front door toward the right side, beside the deck.  There’s a bit of a jog here because we didn’t want to extend the interior over the garage – those rooms are always cold, no matter what you do!  We also have a side entrance at the back for muddy feet.  There isn’t a full 2nd storey at the back because there are clearances for hydro wires we have to respect.

The main floor. Our architect did a great job of hiding support beams beside the fridge and also by the front door.
Nice and big and open!

The upstairs.  After 29 years of marriage, we’re finally upgrading to a king-sized bed!  Great that we could work in a bay window in the bathroom – the perfect spot for our clawfoot tub which was original to the cottage.  The sitting room is affectionately known as the “Sangria Room”!  I hope to decorate it like a screened in porch, even though it will be a proper room and fully insulated.
