After the painters finished we were able to move our
furniture somewhat into place. Stephen
has been working away on trimwork, installed doorknobs, and closet organizers. The job description of the Chief Trim
Carpenter is ever-expanding! Also lots
of work on the Sangria Room. I found an
amazing screen door online for $25! The
perfect size – Stephen just had to plane it a little to make it fit. For those of you who remember my grandparents/parents
old cottage, we have the old wooden couch and chair. Classic cottage décor! Plans to recover the cushions, perhaps in the
fall. Sitting in my Dad’s Morris chair, this
room is quickly becoming my favourite.

The handrail for the stairs has also been installed. One more thing that needed to be done so we
could get our occupancy permit. I still
need to stain it, but waiting until a little more dust is gone so that it has a
nice smooth finish.
Tony was working on the upstairs bathroom and shower stall,
which seemed to take forever. After a
few revisions, exchanges & re-orders to our choice of tile for the shower
floor it’s been finally laid. Third time’s
a charm! It was important that the floor
tiles drain effectively, and the first 2 choices had concerns due to height
differences and possible puddles.
Function before fashion! We just
ended up with basically the same tiles and overall design as we had at our old
house which we loved.
The bathroom counter arrived and looks great. We sprung for Corian solid surface up there
with the integrated sinks. We also put
in one of those all-in-one shower spa units with a rainshower and 6 individual
jets.
Now to just pick out some mirrors,
get a glass shower door, and the clawfoot tub re-glazed and installed. Then of course crack some champagne and take
a long bubble bath!
The kitchen countertops FINALLY arrived. Apparently we chose a special order counter
(of course) and combined with our kitchen planner on holiday, it ended up
taking SEVEN weeks for laminate counters.
Tim came back to do the install, only to discover that once the corner stove
was slid in the drawers on either side wouldn’t open. Briefly considered leaving the stove a little
off-centre, but I KNOW every time I looked at it, it would bother me for the
next few decades. (Yes, I’m the OCD one
who doesn’t like her sandwiches cut on the diagonal because that’s not symmetrical…) So, Tim cut down the cabinet boxes on each
side and we are now waiting for new drawers to be manufactured. Can put a few things in the kitchen cupboards,
but I won’t be able to fully organize until those critical drawers come. I’ll have to really think about how to
organize the kitchen since we have minimal uppers (due to all the windows) and
lots of things will need to be put into base cabinets.

Once we had countertops, Chris the plumber was able to
return and install sinks, dishwasher, washer & dryer, and toilets! Yes, we now finally have running water on
every floor – no more running to the basement.
During this it was discovered that there was no vent for the clothes
dryer. Thank goodness Tony was also
there that day and was able to help us out.
Tim installed laundry room cabinets so now I can organize my cleaning
supplies in there.
Over the past month, we’ve been bringing over boxes from the
condo. We are happy to announce that we
now have a second bedroom set up in the condo, instead of mattresses against
the wall and chairs, pictures, and pillows stacked to the ceiling. There are still many stacks of boxes in
corners of each room, but every day it’s more and more settled there. Tony put in a couple of new ceiling fans,
toilet and bathroom sink taps, so that has also given it a little face
lift. Ibby and I enjoy walks down to
Lake Ontario to collect driftwood. One
day when all the boxes are gone I’ll share pictures of our nautical condo.

Ibby and I spent 4 hours Saturday burning nothing but
cardboard in the fire pit. Mind you,
cardboard goes up fast, but we just had a TON!
All of the boxes for things that were delivered and then installed such
as sinks, laundry cabinets, lighting, and many, many boxes from the hardwood
flooring. A lot of the empty boxes had
been laid down on the floors to protect them while work was still going on. But now most of that is behind us, and I really
couldn’t start effectively cleaning and vacuuming until the boxes and all the
associated dust and dirt on top was gone.
Bought a new vacuum yesterday specifically for hardwood floors and it’s
working great.
So, that’s where we are today. All that’s left is the cleaning!
