January 2012
The big progress this month was getting boulder toes
installed on our shoreline. We had
applied for the permits and several grants a full year earlier. The work is done when the ground is frozen to
minimize damage. Our community wasn’t
undertaking any shoreline preservation work as a group this year. And since our stretch of shoreline isn’t a
priority area (it’s fairly deep and away from the road) it would realistically
be decades before our area was done.
With the community as a whole not applying for grants there was grant
money there for the asking, so we decided to go ahead and cover for the
shoreline work on our own. As it turned
out, the grants received defrayed about half the expense, but it still cost us
the equivalent of a nice beach vacation.
In our opinion, this is an investment in the future that will be enjoyed
long after a suntan would have faded.
Another trip to my parents.
Jaime still in crisis. I started
volunteering one afternoon every other week at Jaime’s school, and enjoyed
getting to know his classmates. There
are 8 kids in his class, and they can always use an extra hand!
